Your vehicle's engine burns fuel and oxygen to run. Its spark plugs ignite the mix. How does the process work, though? Stick your key in your ignition's lock cylinder and turn it. Your ignition switch triggers, and many other ignition parts start working -- your car battery, a starter motor, a solenoid, and an ignition coil, to name just a few. Together, they produce an electrical charge. That charge gets sent to the plugs. When their leads capture it, the air and gas mixture inside your engine combusts, and that generates power. To make matters worse, they can go bad. Their leads can widen, usually as they rust. This weakens sparks. Engine misfires and shutdowns often result. Broken spark plugs, though, usually cause severe engine cylinder damage. Luckily, the OEM variety get built to last, for up to 100,000 miles and millions of ignitions. Just be sure you change any approaching their recommended mileage limit. You can usually find that info in your owner's manual.
