Buick Envision Alternators
While your battery is responsible for delivering the electricity your Buick Envision needs in order to start, it's actually the alternator that powers most of the SUV's electrical systems.
There's a lot that goes into your alternator's delivery of that electricity, though. Your crankshaft takes the vertical motion of the engine's pistons and converts it into rotary motion. That triggers a drive belt, which turns a pulley located on the rotor shaft. The magnetic coils inside the rotor spin, which creates electricity. That electricity is then sent to the various systems that rely on it, such as the power windows, entertainment system, headlights, and more.
How to Identify a Bad Alternator
Alternators don't always give you advance warning when they fail, unfortunately. If you notice any of these signs, have yours checked as soon as possible:
- The power windows stop working
- Your entertainment system acts up
- The headlights start to dim or flicker
- You hear a whining noise from the engine area
- The battery keeps dying
To confirm that your alternator is at fault, check the battery’s voltage with the engine is turned off. If it reads below 12.5 volts, charge the battery and test it again. If the voltage reading isn't higher after charging, your alternator is probably the reason. A new genuine GM alternator is best, since it's guaranteed to be compatible with your SUV.
