Buick Enclave Alternators
You probably already know that your battery produces the electricity your Buick Enclave needs for ignition, but you may not realize that there's another part that's responsible for generating most of the electricity that powers your SUV's various systems. That part? Your factory-installed alternator.
How Your Alternator Works
The alternator is usually mounted on the front of your engine. It's essentially a generator, with responsibility for recharging the battery and distributing electricity to vehicle parts like the headlights, power windows, and entertainment system. A serpentine belt wraps around it and connects to the engine crankshaft. The crankshaft turns thanks to the up-and-down movement of the pistons, which converts that motion into circular motion. That then spins a rotor that's surrounded by magnets. Those magnets pass over copper wiring, creating a magnetic field that produces voltage. A voltage regulator manages the amount of voltage that's sent to the battery and also distributes electricity to the systems that need it.
How to Spot a Failing Alternator
In time, even the best alternator can go bad. Here are some indications that yours is beginning to fail:
- Your headlights begin to dim
- Your power windows stop working
- Your entertainment system begins acting up
- Your battery repeatedly dies
- You hear a whining noise from your engine
